James has over 20 years of experience within the residential sector, with a focus on Build to Rent (BTR) since 2012.
He is a recognised advocate for the sector, with expertise across design, planning & affordable housing, development & construction, and stakeholder engagement. With extensive delivery experience across the full tenure spectrum, he understands the range of priorities for investors, owners, residents, local communities and policymakers in delivering successful long-term rental led developments.
James was previously a Senior Director at Greystar, delivering BTR and mixed-use communities. He led engagement with UK central and local government as BTR policy emerged, as well as with key project stakeholders. He also contributed to their student accommodation business and provided 3rd-party management consultancy to investors. James was formerly a Partner at Deloitte Real Estate for over 12 years, leading their Residential Projects team.
James sits on the Government’s BTR Joint Committee (MHCLG), the BPF’s BTR Committee, New London Architecture’s (NLA) Expert Housing Panel and the Urban Land Institute’s (ULI) UK Residential Council. He is a regular speaker and commentator on BTR, wider housing issues and modular construction, and contributed to the ULI’s ‘Build to Rent: Best Practice Guide’.
James initially qualified in 1992 as a Chartered Structural Engineer, following a Civil Engineering degree from the University of Bristol. He has also undertaken ancillary roles at the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and has chaired the British Property Federation (BPF) Residential Conference.
